MixTape
A social music app prototype created with Figma
Scientific Visualization Using 3D Animation (ARTIS 408), Professor Anson Call - Iowa State University

Task
For this semester-long project, I was tasked with creating any app idea of my choice in Figma. I decided to create an app called MixTape that would be similar to social music listening and analysis apps such as AirBuds, last.fm or stats.fm. My main goals for this app were to allow the user to:
Log in with an existing Spotify or Apple Music account
View their listening activity statistics such as top artists, top songs, etc. over different periods of time
Add friends and view their listening activity
Set up a profile page for others to see
Challenges
Information architecture - I had a lot of features in mind for this app, so it took a lot of thinking, sketching, and trial and error to figure out how I wanted to organize everything
Not copying other apps - I knew I wanted this app to have the same or similar features as bits and pieces of several other apps, so I was trying to figure out a way of combining my favorite parts of these apps into one new one, rather than directly copying the functionality of one app entirely
Final Result
This project is especially cool to me because it combines two things I love: music and data analysis. I love learning about myself through statistics, and I especially love doing so through my Spotify Wrapped at the end of each year. This is why I love apps like AirBuds and stats.fm; although I obviously know what music I like, it's always fascinating seeing whether the songs I think are my top songs are actually the songs I listened to the most. I think I accomplished my goals of sharing this feeling with users through this app design, and I think it'd be cool to develop it further as a passion project someday.
